Excessive emoji and oEmbed scripts
- Plugins & WordPress
Problem Summary
Excessive emoji and oEmbed scripts add WordPress frontend assets that many sites do not actually need.
Performance Impact
- Extra requests: Emoji detection and oEmbed discovery add page overhead
- More head markup: Additional links and scripts make the document heavier
- Unneeded JavaScript: Pages without emoji or embeds still pay the cost
How to Detect
- Page source: Search for emoji detection scripts and oEmbed links
- Network tab: Check for
wp-emoji-releaseand embed assets - Theme audit: Review which WordPress default actions are enabled
Solutions
1. Disable Emoji Script When Unused
If the site does not need WordPress emoji compatibility, remove the frontend script and styles.
2. Disable oEmbed Discovery Where Unneeded
Sites that do not embed or expose oEmbed content can remove related head links.
3. Keep Needed Embeds Lazy
Video and social embeds should load only when visible or requested.
4. Retest Editor Behavior
Make sure content editing and expected embeds still work after cleanup.
